People from various parts of Sanvordem constituency have expressed condolences over the death of their former MLA and businessman Anil Salgaocar on Friday.

Salgaokar was an independent candidate who had served as Sanvordem MLA from 2007 to 2012, after having defeated Govind Sawant (Congress), Vinay Tendulkar (BJP) and Jagdish Jog (MGP) in the 2007 Assembly polls.

Speaking to The Goan, Sanvordem MLA Ganesh Gaonkar has expressed his condolences over the demise of Salgaocar.

“Salgaonkar was an intelligent person and a successful businessman. Many locals got employment in the mining sector because of his business in Sanvordem constituency,” said Gaonkar.

Kalay Sarpanch Vaishali Naik also condoled the passing away of Salgaocar.

“The former MLA was a noble man. He had helped many people who went to seek his help,” said Naik.

Kalay Deputy Sarpanch Kishore Dessai recalled that Salgaocar had fought a legal battle to safeguard the interests of locals from Kalay.

“A few years ago, locals from Kalay were confronted by a factory linked to air and water pollution in the area. The locals were helpless and moved by their plight, Salgaocar had fought the case in the High Court on behalf of the villagers against the factory.”

“Later, the factory was shut down and removed from the village, providing major relief to the locals,” recalled Dessai.

Other locals remembered Salgaocar as a person who had helped several people and their children in academics and others who were provided financial aid.
