A 54-year-old policeman from Moira died while a youth was seriously injured when a motorcycle and a scooter collided with each other in Porvorim early Saturday morning .

Porvorim Police informed that Assistant Sub Inspector Puroshattam Mandrekar, attached to the police headquarters, was on his way to Panaji on his bike, while Abhishek Chari (21) from Guirim was proceeding on a scooter to Mapusa.

On reaching near the Ashwini garage in Porvorim, the scooterist veered to the right and collided with the oncoming motorcyclist. The impact of the collision was so severe that the deceased policeman was flung almost six meters away, Porvorim police said.

The policeman suffered grievous head injuries and died on the spot, while the 21-year-old scooterist is battling for life at the hospital, police said.

According to the police, the deceased policeman wore a helmet, but the youth did not. “The helmet was lying on the road and probably must have popped out with the impact of the collision,” a police officer said.

Both were rushed to Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.

Porvorim Police registered an offence against Abhishek Chari for driving in a rash and negligent manner. PSI Manjunath Naik is investigating the case.
