The newly-elected Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) is on the verge of entering into a war with their municipal administration over failure to act as per the council's resolutions.

While Councillor Chaya Soiru Komarpant stayed away from the council meeting on Tuesday for failure of the administration to remove roadside vendors, CMC Chairperson Prathana Naik Gaonkar held the CMC administration responsible for failure to stop illegal activities taking place on the municipal coast.

“Several unauthorized shacks and huts are being operated illegally and if the administration initiate action against them, our council can become richer by over Rs 20 lakh,” Naik Gaunkar said after the meeting.

Naik Gaunkar said inspite of knowing well, no action has been initiated to stop the ongoing works at Konko Island. “Sending notices is not sufficient to stop illegalities. Take action. Also sending mere notices to illegal shacks and huts will not do. Take further action, if municipal authorities take note of several illegal huts and shacks operating on our coast, we could be richer by over Rs 20 lakh.”

Naik Gaunkar also came down hard on TCP for holding back occupancy certificate to the newly built and inaugurated market complex. “Surprisingly, the TCP has raised objection over access road to the market complex. How did the TCP grant construction licence in the first place if road access was not existing,” asked the chairperson.

Interestingly, when asked why market complex inspite of commissioning three months ago by Deputy CM Francis D’Souza and Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar was not yet opened for operation, Naik Gaunkar said the building has electrical fittings but has not yet been provided with power connection.

Councillor Komarpant, one of the five ruling councillors, stayed away from the meeting in protest against failure of the administration to shift the roadside vendors dangerously occupying the roads.
