Freedom Fighter Naguesh Karmali has warned the BJP-led government that it would meet the same fate as the Congress has in the last assembly election, if it goes ahead to give grants to English medium schools in the State.

Speaking at the melawa organised by the Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch on Saturday in Mapusa, Karmali reminded the BJP that before the last election Digambar Kamat government had agreed to give grants to English medium schools and were reduced to single digit after the election result.

“In the last election, Congress was reduced to a single digit of 9. Now, maybe, it’s the turn of BJP which may further be reduced to 8,” Karmali said.

Addressing the gathering, he said the local languages will perish if the government brings a law to issue grants to English medium schools.

Educationist Pandurang Nadkarni said that in 2011 when BBSM launched a movement against the then government’s decision to give grants to English schools, the BJP approached them and to support them.

“Manohar Parrikar, who was then the opposition leader and Laxmikant Parsekar, president of BJP, promised to resolve the Medium of Instruction issue, as per our wish. Today, they have forgotten the promise,” Nadkarni said.

He cautioned the people not to fall prey to BJP-government’s ploy of raising the amount of various schemes launched by the BJP.

“The BJP will dangle the carrot of increasing the dole amount on various schemes like Griha Adhaar, Ladli Laxmi, etc. Don’t fall to their tactics,” Nadkarni said.

Around 300 people attended the BBSM melawa held at Saraswat Vidyalaya hall in Khorlim, Mapusa.
