PWD cuts water supply to Aldona,

diverts it to Mapusa, Porvorim

In what appears to be a clear case of robbing Peter to pay Paul, the Public Waters Department has cut water supply to Aldona in order to quench the thirst of people of Mapusa and Porvorim.

In the last two days, Aldona locals have been facing problem of irregular water supply, as water supply to the village has been reduced.

What has upset the villagers more was that the supply was cut without giving them a prior intimation.

Sources in the department disclosed that water supply to Aldona was indeed reduced and supply was diverted to Mapusa and Porvorim after people from those areas complained of poor water supply.

When The Goan tried to contact the PWD officials concerned, none were able to give a satisfactory reply.

PWD, Executive Engineer, V M Chavan’s phone was switched off when The Goan tried to contact him. Assistant Engineer, Vilas Tamboskar, also said he was on leave. “I cannot speak about the issue, as I am on leave. The EE, VM Chavan is also on leave,” he said.

When questioned as to who had the charge in absence of both of them, he said he was not sure but expected Bicholim EE, Nirmal Gopalan could hold the charge.

“I haven’t got an official order from the government, so I won’t be able to say anything on the water supply,” EE, Nirmal Gopalan said.

Local MLA and Goa Housing Board, Chairman, Glen Ticlo confirmed he got calls from the residents of his constituency and that he would take up the issue with the engineers concerned.

When he was informed that water supply from Aldona was diverted to Mapusa and Porvorim, Ticlo said: “I am not concerned about Mapusa or Porvorim. I am more concerned about my constituency and will definitely take it up with the authorities.”

It may be recalled last week while speaking to a section of the press, Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza had said that Mapusa was getting less water supply then what was allotted to it.
