Haphazard Borda footpath work irks activists

MARGAO

Local activists and NGOs have complained to the Public Works Department (PWD) on Thursday, alleging haphazard work on the construction of a footpath at Borda without making adequate provision for inspection chambers.

The activists led by Laurel Abranches, Croydon Madeira and others demanded to know how the PWD will clean up the drain when there’s no provision made for the inspection chambers. “Beneath the newly constructed footpath is an old storm water drain, which is about two feet in width and 6-8 inches in depth, and having a length of 500 meters," he said.

Abranches contended that the entire footpath will have to be dug up in the event of the drain getting clogged inside for want of the inspection chambers, which will only result in wastage of tax payers money.

Members of the Margao Municipal Shadow Council including Savio Coutinho, Raju Naik, Camilo Barretto and others were also present.

Meanwhile, MMC councillor Tito Cardozo later told the media that though there was no provision in the tender for the inspection chambers, the PWD has been later requested to construct the inspection chambers along the stretch of the footpath. “The PWD has assured us that the footpath will get the chambers along the stretch," Tito said.
