Housing societies in the commercial capital could face the music from Margao Municipal Council for defaulting in making payments to the door-to-door waste collectors.

A visibly-agitated Margao’s First Citizen, Babita Angle Prabhudesai, told municipal officials manning the door-to-door waste collection by self help groups (SHGs) to compile a list of housing societies that have refused to pay fees to the workers.

The MMC chairperson's reaction came after the officials drew her attention to the refusal by some of the housing societies to pay the fees to SHGs engaged in collection of door-to-door garbage.

“Many an apartment owner refused to pay the garbage fees on grounds that they dump their waste in the bin provided by the housing society. Members of the SHGs have complained that though they are made to collect waste from the housing societies, they are not paid for the work,” a civic official informed the chairperson.

Livid with this disclosure, Babita directed the officials to compile a list of such housing societies before initiating action against the defaulters.

“Apartment owners in housing societies cannot refuse to pay fees for door-to door waste collection just because they they dump waste in the society bins,” she said, while adding that a meeting with the heads of all housing societies will be called soon to resolve the imbroglio.

Meanwhile, the MMC chief instructed civic officials to extend their full co-operation in streamlining the door-to-door waste collection in the six municipal wards, beginning from February 1.
