The two new District Mobile Forensic Units (DMFU) for North and South Goa were inaugurated on Thursday by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar at his residence in Altinho, Panaji. Director General of Police T N Mohan was present at the function.

Parsekar expressed hope that the DMFUs will aid in making the process of crime detection easier. The vans are expected to hasten the process of delivering forensic reports during criminal investigations. The vans are likely to be put to use over the next few days.

Prior to this, the evidence and physical samples collected by the Goa Police during any investigation had to be sent out of State for examination and reports.

CM Parsekar informed that the two vans were acquired at the cost of Rs 64 lakh and were supplied by Kwick Soft Solutions, a Chennai-based company which supplies crime investigation equipment. “Each of these units is equipped with 21 different kits such as crime scene kit, fingerprinting kit, electro static dust-print lifting kit, blood and semen detection kits, narcotics and explosion detection kits and even digital SLR and video recording cameras,” Parsekar stated.

The units have been acquired through the corpus of Rs 10 crore extended to Goa government by the Government of India under the 11th Five-year Plan to set up a regional forensic laboratory and for two mobile forensic units.

Speaking about the State Forensic Science Laboratory in Verna, CM Parsekar said that the government is in the process of recruiting personnel and that the laboratory is likely to become functional by March 2016.

Presently, over 25 technical posts are being filled at the FSL through the Goa Public Service Commission (GPSC).

Meanwhile, explaining the plan of action of the government with regards to the issues plaguing the mining sector, Parsekar said, “All aspects of the issues of truckers, miners and labourers are being thought over. I have met the mine owners and have understood from them the maximum possible rates that they can afford. Similarly, I will meet the truckers.”

He stated that the opinion of the directors of mines and transport and the concerned secretaries would also be sought for arriving at a final figure which works for all. “Negotiations are going on,” Parsekar said.

Explaining that the demand from various sectors for more funds never dies, Parsekar said, “For instance, there has been an increase of 43 per cent in expenditure from April to December last year and the same time period this year. On the other hand, the income has grown only by 15 per cent.”
