Independent MLAs Vijai Sardesai, Rohan Khaunte and Naresh Sawal have promised to launch a new regional party to serve as a strong local secular force in the State.

Addressing a press conference, called to condemn the action taken against the protesting FTII students as well as police action against the protesters who were demanding justice for Bismarque Dias, Sardesai said only a strong regional party would help in solving the problems that the State faced.

“People are fed up with the BJP. The party is only keen on suppressing dissent", Sardesai said.

“The Congress has become defunct. It is not taking up any issues as demanded by the people. In this situation, the people need a strong local party which does not have any high command in Delhi to report to and whose high command will be the people of Goa,” Sardesai said.

Sardesai said that the party would be officially announced on January 26 next year, even as he didn’t disclose how many current MLAs are with him. He said that initially the sitting MLAs including the independents would not be members of the party, but before the elections they would join the new party.

The press conference was called to condemn the police action against FTII students. The three MLAs were flanked by artist Subodh Kerkar, Filmmaker Saeed Mirza and others.
