In an attempt to wrest the initiative from political rivals, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has decided to write to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and all legislators with an appeal to install a life-sized statue of Dr Jack De Sequeira in the hallows of the Goa Legislative Assembly.
Lobo said that due to the historic Opinion Poll led by the then opposition leader, Dr Jack De Sequeira, Goa had managed to retain its separate identity.
“If today we 40 MLAs have got the opportunity to represent the people of Goa, it is because of the great visionary, Dr Jack De Sequeira,” sai Lobo, while addressing the media in his office on Saturday.
He said that if Goa was surging ahead in the 50th year of the Opinion Poll, it was primarily because of the role played by late Dr Jack De Sequeira in the movement to retain Goa’s separate identity.
“The true history and the complete portrait of the Goa Legislative Assembly could only be completed if we install a life-sized statue of late Dr Jack De Sequeira next to the life-size statue of Goa's first chief minister, Dayanand Bandodkar, in front of the Goa Legislative Assembly,” the Calangute MLA said.
Trying to checkmate the Congress, Lobo said that after Dr Jack De Sequeira-led UGDP’s reign Congress ruled the State for almost 20 years, but did nothing to consolidate the good initiatives of UGDP.
“After coming to power, Congress forgot everything of the UGDP. They never gave credit to Dr Jack De Sequeira,” he said.

He said it was due to the initiative of his government that the life-sized statue of Goa's first chief minister, Dayanand Bandodkar, was installed in the Goa Legislative Assembly.
“Now, I have written to the governor, chief minister and all other colleagues on the need to install the life-sized statue of the father of the Opinion Poll in the Goa Legislative Assembly in the 50th year of the historic Opinion Poll,” he said.
He said if all his colleagues and others enjoy the fruits of the Opinion Poll, it was all because of Dr Jack De Sequeira.
“I think Dayanand Bandodkar’s statue in the assembly is incomplete. It will be complete only after Dr Jack De Sequeira’s statue is erected next to him,” Lobo said.
“I appeal to my government to take up the decision to install the life size statue of Dr Jack De Sequeira next to Dayanand Bandodkar in the monsoon session,” he added.
