Saunsthaniks of Sheer Chandreshwar Bhutnath temple at Gudi-Paroda on Sunday staged a protest rally to oppose controversial activity of felling of trees on the slopes of Chandreshwar Parvat at Paroda.

The rally started from Cotta Amona to Gudi Paroda (Parvat), in which about 80 mahajans of Shree Chandreshwar Bhutnath temple took part.

The mahajans of the temple demanded strict action against those involved in the controversial activities on Parvat within eight days. They said they will organise a strong protest if action was not initiated by the government.

Speaking to media persons, Krishna Gauns Dessai said the Parvat area is a sacred and holy place for many local people. “This place is a heritage site as per the archaeological department. Hence, felling of trees and building of mud road on steep slopes of Chandreshwar Parvat is illegal and dangerous for the ecology of the Parvat area,” said Dessai.

He further said the government should take this matter seriously and initiate strict action against the persons involved in such controversial activities.

The mahajans said Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and Environment Minister Rajendra Arlekar should immediately take cognisance of this issue to avoid further damage to Parvat.

They further said if the departments concerned do not take action within eight days, then all the mahajans will block the national highway at Paroda and also stage a protest rally at the TCP Margao.
