The Mandrem gram sabha on Sunday witnessed heated discussions over the issues of massage parlours, community hall and a housing project.

The locals said that in the previous gram sabha it was resolved not to give permission for massage parlours in the village. A villager, Tushar Govekar, sought to know what action has been taken against illegal massage parlours, which are operating in the village.

Deputy Sarpanch A Fernandes said notices have been sent to owners of seven massage parlours. Sudesh Sawant suggested that the panchayat should not take action against the legal massage parlours.

The residents said the construction work of community hall is in progress and the panchayat had given permission on July 27, but the foundation stone was laid on July 4. Sudesh Sawant sought to know how the foundation stone was laid before permission was given by the panchayat.

“The panchayat had completed all the formalities and the land belongs to the panchayat and there is nothing illegal,” explained the deputy sarpanch.

Another issue that was hotly discussed was that the panchayat issued permission for construction of 10 villas and a compound wall for a project in Mandrem. Rudresh and Amit Sawant asked the panchayat to produce CRZ permissions for the project.

The gram sabha also discussed the issue of African and other nationals staying in the village.

Shivkumar Arolkar demanded that the respective panchayat members should give details of not only the African nationals but also of other nationals, who are residing in rented rooms in the village, to the panchayat.

Shivkumar Arolkar also suggested to levy tax on ATMs operating in the panchayat area, while Nazareth Britto demanded action against those keeping construction and other material near main road at Ashwem.

In the absence of Sarpanch Vaishali Shirodkar, the deputy sarpanch Fernandes chaired the gram sabha. Secretary Francis Fernandes read the minutes of previous gram sabha.
