Paes to team up with Granollers in Chennai Open

CHENNAI

Veteran Indian tennis star Leander Paes will team up with Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the men's doubles at the upcoming ATP Chennai Open and the duo has been seeded second for the event starting, January 4.

The doubles draw at the 20th edition of the event will feature, along with Paes, Rajeev Ram, Benoit Paire and Borna Coric. In the previous edition Paes and Raven Klaasen had ended runners-up, losing to eventual champions Yen-Hsun Lu and Jonathan Marray. Two pairs will be awarded wild cards to play. Chennai Open will witness a line-up of top talent at the $480,000 prize money tournament.

Cutting off at 98, the field for the tournament will see World No. 4 Stanislas Wawrinka vying for a hat-trick of titles, Chennai-debutant World No. 12 Kevin Anderson, World No. 19 and ATP's Comeback Player of the Year 2015 Benoit Paire, World No. 25 Roberto Bautista-Agut, along with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Gilles Muller, Vasek Pospisil, Borna Coric, and Aljaz Bedene representing nine players from amongst the top 50 in the world.

The top-seeded doubles pair for this edition is that of South African Raven Klaasen and American Rajeev Ram.

Devvarman rises to World No 177

NEW DELHI: Somdev Devvarman moved up three places to be ranked No.177 in the latest Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) men’s singles rankings released on Monday. His compatriots Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni stayed at Nos 93 and 170 respectively.

In men’s doubles, Rohan Bopanna, Leander Paes and Purav Raja all maintained their spots at No.9, 41 and 93 respectively. In women’s singles, Ankita Raina was up a place to No 263 but Prerna Bhambri slid a spot to 417.

In women’s doubles, reigning Wimbledon champion Sania Mirza continues to rule the standings at the top. Prarthana Thombare also saw her biggest rise, by climbing 32 positions to be ranked No 265.
