THE VASCO KTC DEPOT

A team from health department along with health officer Dr Vikas Kuvelkar on Tuesday visited the KTC depot at Vasco and found discarded bus tyres filled with rainwater.

Dr Kuvelkar said they found hundreds of used bus tyres piled up in the open. “On closer inspection, we found the larvae of mosquitoes breeding in the stagnated rainwater in the tyres,” said Dr Kuvelkar.

“We immediately sprayed pesticides and warned staff of the KTC depot to clear the area of discarded bus tyres and to stock them in a sheltered area to avoid rainwater stagnation, failing which necessary action will be initiated against the KTC depot staff for endangering human life,” said Dr Kuvelkar.

VASCO: Two persons are suspected to have died of the dreaded dengue at New Vaddem-Vasco on Sunday.

According to doctors at Chicalim Cottage Hospital, Dhanisha Satardekar (5) was admitted in the hospital with high fever on June 13.

“Saterdekar was suffering from high fever since the last 20 days and was treated in a private hospital. The initial blood test, NS1, conducted at a private lab suspected the child was suffering from dengue. However, the family failed to conduct the actual dengue test 'Maceliza', which confirms the dengue virus present in the patient,” informed a doctor.

The doctors further informed that as Satardekar failed to respond to the treatment, the private hospital directed the parents to shift the child to Chicalim Cottage Hospital. The child was admitted to CCH and was immediately referred to GMC,where the child succumbed while undergoing treatment on June 14.

The doctors at the CCH said another case of suspected dengue was also referred to the CCH by the private hospital at Vasco, where Elisa Fernandes (47) from New Vaddem was reported to have been suffering from high fever for about 15 days.

The doctors further said in this case, the blood test was conducted by a private lab from Vasco which indicated Fernandes as a suspected case of dengue. However, Fernandes also failed to get the 'Maceliza' test done.

The doctors said Fernandes was referred to CCH by the doctor from a private hospital for treatment. Later, Fernandes was referred to GMC for treatment, but succumbed while undergoing treatment on June 14.

In another case of suspected dengue, Nalesh Amonkar (10), also from New Vaddem who was suffering from high fever, was admitted to CCH and after examining him, he was referred to GMC for further tests and medical treatment.

When contacted, health officer Dr Vikas Kuvelkar confirmed that all the three incidents were dengue related.

“As all the cases were from New Vaddem, we formed a team of 15 members and visited the place. When we inspected the area, we found stagnated water in many vases and other discarded earthen pots and mosquitoes breeding spots,” said Dr Kuvelkar.

“We immediately directed the residents to empty all the stagnated water and later we sprayed the pesticides in the area.”

“We went door-to-door of the residents and advised them to keep their surroundings free of stagnated water, as it is the cause of breeding mosquitoes with dengue virus. We will also start awareness campaign,” he added.
