There's more to look out for in results today

The focus of all attention in Goa on Friday is on the panchayat election results because this is not only seen as a litmus test for new panchayat bodies but is also a test of electoral mindset. There is an uneasy calm all around, more so because in some panchayat areas even single-digit votes could be decisive. While the State plunges into counting mode, it is hoped that the results will throw open answers to a few niggling questions.

This panchayat election has seen a heavy flow of money and freebies with the election machinery failing to keep track, as usual. In some wards, even cash was distributed on the morning of August 10. The question is, whether money power will make a difference this time.

Secondly, family raj has been a talking point in the panchayat election, just like the assembly election. Several candidates have been propelled by husbands or parents who have already stamped their authority on the political canvas. From Michael Lobo’s son to Francisco alias Mickky Pacheco’s wife and Wilfred D’Sa’s spouse, many candidates have infused a family hierarchy into politics. Will the electorate stamp out family raj this time, or will political clout prevail?

Thirdly, this election has seen tacit support for candidates from legislators, with some coming out in the open and even floating panels cutting across party lines. History suggests that winning the confidence of panchayats may not necessarily be a pre-requisite for Assembly electoral wins. Will the local MLA have his way this time?

Fourthly, it is seen at the municipal and Zilla panchayat elections that winning candidates, even independent winners, align themselves with the ruling dispensation to be part of the winning panel. They indulge in celebrations and photo ops that smack off deceit and expose their lust for power. The power-sharing formula and rotational sarpanchas are arrangements solely to satiate political hunger and have nothing to do with leadership or administration. Can this election set a new trend?

Fifthly, panchayat elections are nurseries of power where leaders take their political grooming lessons. There are several cases where those elected at the panchayat level have gone on to upstage the standing legislator at the assembly elections. Can this election bring about a new crop of dynamic and capable leaders that will usher in a change in the panchayat bodies, leaders that stand solidly behind the welfare of the village?

Sixthly, Goans have felt the pain of political betrayal. Leaders have had an increasing penchant for violating people’s mandates. Voters are only in control at the time of casting the ballot, not after that. The defection trend has left considerable bitterness and frustration among the electorate. Can this result even remotely reflect a concern, or this time, like every other time, is it going to be a vote for a friend, relative or a monied politician?

While the ballot boxes open on Friday morning, and candidates anxiously await their fate, there is more than results and numbers to look out for. In this election, the singular motive of every winning candidate should be to protect the identity of our pristine villages and work towards the welfare of the people. Time will tell.
