Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat on Sunday said the imposition of Section 144 questions the intent of the government of holding Zilla Panchayat elections in the State.

“The government wants to hold ZP elections but at the same time it goes ahead and imposes Section 144. This is a contradiction. How will the government be able to hold elections with Section 144 in place?” Kamat questioned.

In an order issued late Saturday night, the South Goa Collector Aji Roy has invoked Section 144 in South Goa due to health emergency posed by Covid-19.

Kamat said Covid spread was a threat to everyone in the State probably hinting at the decision of imposing Section 144 only in South Goa.

To a specific query whether the decision was aimed to silence the people who were protesting against double-tracking and other projects, he said: “Could be.”

He also said the government should come out with a financial package for the vulnerable sections of the society, instead of spending monies on the celebration of 60 years of Goa’s Liberation.
