K'taka on alert for Goa liquor coming to Belagavi, Karwar

The Karnataka excise department will step up vigilance against illicit liquor entering Belagavi and Karwar districts, in view of elections to gram panchayats on December 22.

The decision was taken in view of the election code of conduct, which is in force after the elections to gram panchayats have been announced.

Liquor from Goa is in great demand during the election time, especially since it is available at a comparatively reasonable rates almost 25 percent of the cost of liquor in Karnataka.

According to a press release, a stringent vigil will be maintained at all borders between Karnataka and Goa and every vehicle would be checked thoroughly for Goa liquor which normally enters via Chorla, Anmod and other routes via Maharashtra connecting Belagavi district.

Special squads have been formed to keep a check on illegal stocking of liquor, illicitly distilled liquor and liquor entering from Goa.

Apart from additional check points along with the border check posts, there will be surprise raids carried on those engaged in stocking the liquor.
