GFBOA President Jose Philip D'Souza warned that there could be a mass agitation of fishing community if the government failed to act on fishing boats from neighbouring states fishing in Goan waters during the fishing ban.

" While Goan boat owners are following the fishing ban period, we have huge fishing boats and trawlers from other States fishing in our waters using bull trawling technique during the fishing ban period. These boats arrive from Karnataka and Maharashtra at one time in hundreds and fish everything, from small fish to fish eggs from our waters right from deep sea till a few metres away from the shores and this can finish our business for the coming season, D'souza said.

"Sometimes these boats come in fleets of 200 to 300 and if these boats fish out everything even from the sea bed , the fishing ban to promote fish breeding will have no purpose. It is important to have a two-month fishing ban to promote fish beeding and the Government must keep a watch on these outside boats which destroy our fish and disturb the seas," he added.

"The government must also take strict action on such boats failing which we may not keep quiet and there could be a mass agitation by the fishing community and even have law and order situation " said Dsouza.
