The Goa Forward Party (GFP) has warned to ‘gherao’ the headquarters of the Public Works Department if the Mandrem locals continue to be deprived of uninterrupted water supply within 10 days.
A delegation led by GFP leader Deepak Kalangutkar met the Chief Engineer (I) with a memorandum of their demand to resolve the water crisis in the tourism belt.
“Our people of Mandrem constituency have to wait for hours on a daily basis for water supply. The government of Goa boasts of 'Har Ghar Nall Se Jal' scheme to provide potable water via taps to every household. But Mandrem, that requires around 30 MLD water, gets only 15 MLD water,” the memorandum states.
The Mandrem locals are facing acute water shortage as the taps and wells run dry in the summer months. The 30 MLD water requirements haven’t been fulfilled yet as only 15 MLD water is supplied to the entire Pernem which includes Mandrem.
“Citizens cannot afford to pay for water tankers on a daily basis. We request you to kindly intervene on priority to sort the water crisis faced by our citizens in Mandrem constituency within 10 days, failing which we shall be forced to gherao the PWD headquarters in Panaji,” it said.
