Accusing the BJP of trying to finish small agriculturists in the State by making all efforts to close down the Sanjivani Sugar Factory, the Sanjivani Bachao Samithi (SBS) Secretary Prashant Dessai has his committee would leave no stone unturned to make the factory operational.

The SBS was formed in Sanguem last week after sugarcane cultivators complained that the government had failed to take steps to make the Sanjivani Sugar Factory operational for the upcoming crushing season.

“A mere notification of handing over the factory to the agriculture department will not achieve any results. The management factory needs expertise in the field. How will the agriculture department cope up with duties pertaining to an industry without the desired manpower,” asked Dessai.

“The Sanjivani Sugar Factory is presently in a total mess and needs a revamp. It is only with the active involvement of farmers that the government can put the factory back into operation and turn it into profit.”

Dessai said the SBS would approach the High Court if the government continued to give false assurances to sugarcane cultivators.

At a meeting held in Sanguem last week, SBS committee said they would hold meetings with sugarcane cultivators all around the State to make them aware of the problems plaguing the Sanjivani Sugar Factory.

They also plan to highlight the government’s failure to make the factory operational, despite offers by Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar of technical guidance and support from sugarcane factory operators from neighbouring states.
