Chief Minister Pramod Sawant-led cabinet on Wednesday cleared the Bar Council of India project for setting up an international University for Legal Education and Research.

Sawant announced the decision to clear the project which will be funded by the Bar Council of India, at his customary post-cabinet press conference on Wednesday.

Where will the university be located has not yet been finalised, Sawant said, adding that the cabinet has also decided to set up an International Arbitration Centre on the lines of the one in Singapore.

Addressing the post-cabinet press conference on Wednesday, Sawant said: “An international University for Legal Education and Research by the Bar Council of India has been approved in Goa. We are yet to identify a place for it. A total of 20 per cent of seats will be reserved for Goans. All expenses are being borne by the Bar Council of India, not by us.”

The Bar Council of India will operate the university while Goa government will only provide land free of cost for setting it up.

The University will also operate the proposed International Arbitration Centre, he added.

“Right now there is no International Arbitration Centre in India, there’s only one in Singapore. This International Arbitration Centre will function through the aegis of the university that will be set up here,” the chief minister said.
