Goa's first poha factory at Canacona set to kick-start full-fledged operations

CANACONA
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will inaugurate the State's first Poha manufacturing unit at Canacona Industrial Development Estate (CIDC) on Friday.

According to owners M/s Mahamaya Food Products, the Poha manufacturing unit set up under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY) will initially have a capacity to process 2,000 kg of raw rice a day and production will subsequently increase to 6,000-7,000 kg of rice.

“The factory was initially scheduled to start its production in March, but was postponed due to the Covid pandemic,” said Mahamaya Food Products owner Sneha Gajanan Pai.

Added co-owner Gajanan Pai: “With no such unit in Goa as yet except for small businesses, around 4,000-5,000 tonnes of raw rice is taken outside Goa for Poha production.”

“Except for some small production in Goa only during Diwali, Poha is being imported all year round from outside the State. Poha production can now take place on a large scale in Goa itself.”

Co-owner Sarvesh Pai said the Poha manufactured will be marketed within Goa, thereby meeting the needs of Goans throughout the year.

Deputy Chief Minister Kavlekar, who is also the Agriculture Minister, will also be present along with Director of Agriculture Nevil Alphonso at the inaugural ceremony.
