He also admitted that the corruption allegations vis-à-vis the affairs in the market against some of the councillors had affected the image of the council.
“The drive to clear and bring some order in Mapusa market started on a bright note. But it remained incomplete. It should have been carried out continuously. Some vendors were shuffled and after some time, they came back to the original place. I will complete the drive to clear the market that was started by my predecessor,” said Kavlekar, in an exclusive chat with The Goan, a day after taking over as the new chairperson of the council.
He said he preferred to function in a systematic way and would definitely take some tough decisions to streamline the market in Mapusa.
“I want to know the number of vendors that are there in the market. We have set the process in motion to establish the town vending committee. We will take steps for
the benefit of the consumers,” he said.
The new chairperson further said the allegations over shifting of the vegetable and fruit vendors did affect the image of the council.
“The corruption charges against some individuals during the shifting of vendors in the market affected the entire council,” Kavlekar said.
The chairperson gave a green signal to the ongoing collection system of waste in the civic limits but expressed concern against garbage dumped by “outsiders” in the municipal area.
“Collection of garbage is not an issue. Dumping of garbage by people from surrounding panchayat areas is the key issue that needs to be tackled,” he said.
He said the government was seized of this problem which is a State-wide issue and the government has plans to come out with a policy decision on the issue.
On lack of parking and chaotic traffic condition, he said he would adopt a multi-prong strategy to deal with the
situation.
He said the focus was to clear the rubble dumped at various spots by the roadside and make more space for people to park.
“Parking on one side of the road and strictly implementing the one way rule will help in bringing discipline on Mapusa roads,” he said.
‘Top priority to beautify Mapusa’
MAPUSA: Mapusa Municipal Council, Chairperson, Rohan Kavlekar made it clear that his top focus was to beautify the town.
“Infrastructure projects that are in the pipeline like the new bus-stand, municipal garage development project, Mapusa Downtown Scheme will definitely come up. But what Mapusa needs is really big beautification,” Kavlekar said.
He said the first aim was to beautify all the entry points to Mapusa which was held back due to ongoing projects like that of sewerage and GSUDA.
He further said there were plans to develop the Miracles Garden near Gandhi Chowk, widen the Parra-Mapusa road and beautify and widen the Khorlim junction.
