People visiting the Adhaar Enrolment Centre (AEC) in Porvorim either to apply for a new Aadhaar card or to update details on their existing cards have received little 'adhar' (support) from authorities.

Not only is the AEC located on the second floor of the State Institute of Education (SIE) building in Porvorim, making it difficult for senior citizens, the staircase and floor in the corridor of the office is soaked with rainwater, making it slippery and dangerous for visitors.

During rains, water enters the corridor and people waiting outside the AEC for their turn to submit details are forced to move carefully on the slippery floor.

When contacted, Sayed Nasseruddin of Porvorim said he had gone to the AEC at about 10 am on Tuesday along with his son and daughter-in-law for Aadhaar card related work.

“All the stairs leading to the office on the second floor were wet and water was dripping from the ceiling. Besides, the pathway on the second floor was not cleaned.”

“The floor had become slippery and was dangerous for people, especially senior citizens, to walk. The stagnant water could lead to an infestation of mosquitoes. This office needs to be shifted to a better and more conducive place on the ground floor, especially since there is no lift facility,” said Nasseruddin.

According to sources, there has been little maintenance of the government building. There is a school for special children on the ground floor and the Goa Sarvashikha Abhiyan office on the first floor.

“The government should urgently look into the matter and undertake repair works, so that the building is safe for staff, students and visitors,” said the source.
