A Central team, comprising six members under the chairmanship of Onkar Kedia, joint-secretary (sports), Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports visited Goa earlier this week. The purpose of their trip was to inspect all the venues shortlisted for the 36th National Games scheduled to be held in November 2016.

“Based on the proposal prepared by the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) the central team along with our team visited all the venues which are tentatively shortlisted for the National Games 2016. We are going to use seven new existing venues, four existing venues which need to be refurbished and six venues are to be newly constructed,” informed Sandip Jacques, Executive Director at SAG and the Jt-CEO for the National Games. He further said that SAG has shortlisted around 30 disciplines and may even drop one or two because 28 disciplines is the minimum needed to accommodate in the Games. Depending on the disciplines, the venues may change. "For instance canoeing/ kayaking, rowing was planned at Colvale river but if we find that the cost of equipment and incorporating it is too high we may look at adding another two alternate disciplines," added Jacques.

After the inspection, a rough estimate has been prepared and Goa is looking for funds from the centre. The six member team that inspected the venues has also made certain suggestions which need to be incorporated.

“They (Central team) have asked us to upgrade certain facilities for practice as well. By early next week we plan to send a proposal to the centre, requesting them for around Rs 285 crore to raise civil structures. It is up to the centre to decide how much they can provide,” Jacques told .

He further went on to say that it is a huge task to ensure that they get a substantial amount because it is not only for the state government to pump in but they also require help from the centre as well. The project cost which is required to make the games operational is an additional Rs 100 crore for organising the games.

“Earlier we received from the centre around Rs 97.80 crore that was used for the infrastructure created for the Lusofonia Games 2014 and last year a sum of Rs 15.80 crore was received for the construction of the athletic stadium at Bambolim,” he added.
