Cuncolim Municipal Council’s drive in the market to clear encroachments ended in an exchange of war of words between Chairperson Laximan Naik and opposition Councilors on Sunday.
The drive triggered an uproar after the CMC issued a notice to a hawker to pay a fine of Rs 2000 for parking four-wheeler in the market.
Opposition Councilors Udesh Desai and Rahul Desai vehemently objected to the action initiated by the Civic body, demanding to know how the Municipality issue the challan under the letter head of Department of Science, Technology and Environment for an offense relating to parking of four-wheelers in the market.
Udesh wondered whether the department of Science, Technology and Environment is now looking after the Cuncolim market or the Cuncolim Municipality is using the letter head of the department to challan a purported offense beyond its jurisdiction.
This ensued a war of words between Udesh and the Chairperson Laximan Naik, with the latter making a remark, which was objected to by Udesh and Rahul.
Councilor John Fernandes told the media that the inspection was held to streamline the movement of pedestrians in the market and ensure conduct of business in an orderly manner. He said the Civic body would implement the measures in the market based on the inspection carried out on Sunday.
