Demolition drive targets 21 illegal structures at Calangute Beach

Acting on directions issued by the High Court, the Tourism Department on Tuesday launched a major demolition drive against illegal structures erected on the beach at Khobra-Vaddo, Calangute, as part of an ongoing effort to reclaim public spaces and enforce coastal regulations.
Officials said the operation commenced early in the morning with the support of local authorities and law enforcement personnel. By Tuesday afternoon, 11 of the 21 identified unauthorised structures had been demolished.
"The drive is being carried out strictly in compliance with the High Court's directions. A total of 21 illegal structures have been identified in this phase and work is progressing as planned," a senior Tourism Department official said.
The remaining structures are expected to be removed on Wednesday, following which authorities will undertake a detailed inspection of the site to ensure complete clearance of encroachments.
The demolition forms part of the second phase of a larger campaign initiated by the Tourism Department to remove illegal constructions from beaches and restore public access to coastal areas. Officials said repeated notices had been issued to the occupants before action was initiated.
Authorities have deployed adequate personnel at the site to maintain law and order and ensure that the demolition proceeds without disruption. Police presence was also intensified as a precautionary measure.
Tourism Department officials reiterated that beach stretches and public spaces cannot be occupied without the necessary permissions and warned that similar action would be taken against other illegal structures found along the state's coastline.
"The objective is to protect public property, preserve the natural beach environment and ensure compliance with the law. Encroachments on beaches will not be tolerated," the official added.
The Tourism Department has been undertaking a series of enforcement measures in recent months following judicial scrutiny over illegal occupations and unauthorised commercial activities on Goa's beaches.
The latest action at Khobra-Vaddo is expected to pave the way for further enforcement drives in other coastal areas facing similar issues.
