Gold ornaments, cash, and household items were destroyed in a fire at a flat on the first floor of Siya Complex in Borde-Bicholim on Saturday morning.
The flat owner had rented out the flat to a tenant and no one was present inside the flat when the fire broke out. Locals noticed smoke emanating from the apartment and alerted the fire brigade.
Fire personnel rushed to the spot and, with the help of local residents, managed to bring the blaze under control. However, by then, household articles, gold ornaments, and cash kept inside the flat had already been reduced to ashes.
On receiving information about the incident, Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye and Bicholim Councillor Deepa Shirgaonkar visited the site and inspected the situation.
Bicholim police also reached the spot and conducted a panchanama while assessing the exact extent of the damage. The exact cause of the fire is still unknown, and officials from the fire department are conducting further investigations.
