The Goa government's department of higher education has signed a deal with top tech firms -- Tata Consultancy Services and Google -- to launch a programme for skill training of students studying in colleges across the State.

The MoU for the initiative was signed by a representative of the firms and Director of Higher Education Prasad Lolyekar at a function held at the ministerial block of the Secretariat.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who also holds the education portfolio, hailed the move as path-breaking in Goa's education sector.

He said, the programme involves imparting training in various skills including communication, computational thinking, coding etc to students

in colleges across Goa in phase one.

"In the second phase the initiative will be taken to schools in the State where students will be introduced to various skill sets," Sawant said.

The skills training is seen as a significant step in ensuring that the students master skills essential for the job market and do away with the lacuna in the existing education system.

The organizations will also help the government during the skilling week which is slated to be held in the first week of November and will cover around 1100 students in the first phase.
