Expressing concern over the shifting profile of tourists visiting Goa, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has called on the State government to focus on attracting foreign visitors once again, while discouraging domestic tourists who create nuisance or disturb the peace in local areas.

Lobo said that Goa’s tourism brand – once synonymous with quality, culture and international appeal – was at risk of being diluted due to unruly behaviour by a section of visitors.

“We don’t want tourists who cause trouble to locals or disrupt peace in our neighbourhoods,” Lobo said.

“Goa needs responsible visitors who respect our culture and traditions. We must preserve the image of Goa as a premium destination, not one associated with chaos or disrespect,” he added.

The MLA noted that the number of foreign tourists visiting Goa has declined sharply in recent years, a trend that has hurt local businesses and hospitality stakeholders who depended on long-stay and high-spending visitors from Europe and other parts of the world.

He urged the State Tourism Department to take proactive steps to revive Goa’s international tourist market through improved infrastructure, better cleanliness and safety standards, and targeted global marketing campaigns.

“Foreigners once formed the backbone of Goa’s tourism economy. We need to restore that balance. The focus should be on quality, not quantity,” Lobo observed.

Tourism stakeholders have echoed similar concerns, saying that unregulated domestic influx, traffic congestion, and poor enforcement of laws have led to rising tensions in key beach belts such as Calangute, Baga, and Candolim.

Lobo maintained that while all tourists are welcome, the State must send a clear message that Goa values discipline and respect.

“Hospitality does not mean tolerating nuisance. We must ensure tourism that sustains livelihoods without disturbing local life,” he added.
