MARGAO
Upset and agitated over the silence of the Congress leadership to defend Leader of the Opposition against attacks by Congress-turned-BJP leader Urfan Mulla, supporters of Digambar Kamat have set December 5 as the deadline for GPCC chief Girish Chodankar to publicly condemn Mulla’s diatribe against the Margao MLA.

Veteran Congressman and PCC Vice-President, M K Sheikh who attended the Margao Block Congress Committee meeting on Wednesday evening, has been told by the block workers to convey their sentiments as well as their demand to GPCC chief Girish Chodankar.

While the block has decided to take future course of action after December 5, many a worker have called for the resignation of the block members as well as district and PCC members from Margao in support of their demand and to express their solidarity with the Margao MLA.

Sources in the know told The Goan that party vice-president, M K Sheikh has conveyed the demand of the Margao block Congress workers and their sentiments to the GPCC chief last night itself, pushing the ball in the court of Chodankar to address the issues raised by Kamat’s supporters.

Margao Congress workers took the opportunity of the monthly meeting of the block, which was attended by MLA Digambar Kamat and party vice-president M K Sheikh to express their indignation over the party’s failure to come to the rescue of the Opposition leader against the backdrop of allegations made by Mulla. The GPCC chief, who was also scheduled to attend the meeting, was absent.

Agitated workers demanded to know from Block President Gopal Naik and other leaders why the Party president did not issue a single statement against Mulla. They are believed to have pointed out that why the Congress president has not addressed a single media conference along with the Congress leaders, who were named by Mulla that they and the party do not subscribe to the views expressed by the outgoing minority cell leader.

Some of the block workers even went to the extent of pointing out that while Chodankar was quick to reply to a statement made by Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, the GPCC chief has not uttered a single word against Mulla till date.

With two days to go for the December 5 deadline set by the Margao Congress workers to the GPCC chief, Congress circles were abuzz with speculations how Chodankar will go about in addressing the concerns expressed by the Margao block Congress members.

Sources in the know informed that the Opposition Leader too is unhappy that none of the party leaders had condemned Mulla’s statements directed at him. Kamat, when contacted, played down the episode, by only saying the party workers must have been hurt and angry over the developments.

This is the second time in less than a week that Margao Congress leaders have questioned within the party why GPCC chief Girish Chodankar did not come out and defend the Opposition leader in the light of Mulla’s statement.
