MMC Chairperson clamps down on unauthorised biz

MMC workers confiscate fish boxes and baskets from the illegal vendors.

MARGAO
Margao Municipal Chairperson Lyndon Pereira on Wednesday was seen outside the wholesale fish market to apprise himself of the illegal and unauthorized vendors doing business outside the wholesale fish market -- right under the nose of the civic authorities.

The civic body chief also saw for himself how fish-transporting and other vehicles were found parked on both sides of the wholesale fish market road. He also came across vendors and hawkers all along the wholesale fish market road.

After the MMC market inspectors and workers got the fish vendors cleared from the wholesale fish market road, the Municipal Chairperson said all out efforts will be made to ensure the wholesale fish market road is free from hawkers and vendors.

Conceding that the vendors were having a field day along the wholesale fish road with no action forthcoming from municipal and police authorities, Lyndon said he would closely monitor the action initiated by the MMC officials along the road.

“I will conduct rounds of the wholesale fish market road before coming to office. I want to put system in place wherein the vendors and hawkers do not invade roads and hamper vehicular movement”, he said.

The MMC chairperson now plans to write to the South Goa district Collector as well as the police and PWD authorities to get the vehicles cleared from the wholesale market road. “I have received complaints that the fish transporting vehicles are parked along the wholesale fish market road after business hours. You cannot park the vehicles along the roads. I will write to the district Collector. South in this regard”, he said.

Meanwhile, the MMC workers and market inspectors carried out anti-encroachment drive across the Fatorda area of the city, seizing fruits and vegetable sold along the road side.
