The process to set up the IIT at Sanguem seems to be gaining momentum, with authorities reportedly contacting farmers on whether they would be interested to sell off their fields.

Despite opposition from farmers and others residing at Kharkhatiaghati-Sanguem, the government seems to be moving its machinery to get the IIT back to the same site which was previously opposed by people.

When the people of Loliem-Canacona had rejected the proposal to set up the IIT in the village, the government had made attempts to get the project at Kharkhatiaghati-Sanguem.

However, farmers in the area had strongly objected to the project in Sanguem, compelling the government to seek an alternate land at Sattari, where the project was also opposed by locals there.

However, the government seems to be keen to have the project at the saite site in Kharkhatiaghati-Sanguem.

Sources said officials from the Mamlatdar’s office are reportedly contacting farmers who have paddy fields at Kharkhatiaghati Sanguem to enquire it they are interested in selling their fields.

One such farmer, who was contacted by the official, informed that he was not interested in selling his land. The official has now asked the farmer to submit his documents to the office allegedly for verification.

These moves from the office of the Sanguem mamlatdar assume significance given the fact that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had recently made a statement in Sanguem that the IIT would come up in the taluka.
