Team traps absconder in Lucknow

Porvorim police have arrested a person from Lucknow who was evading arrest since the last five months in connection with a case of cheating a person after impersonating as an Intelligence Bureau officer.

Police said Vishant Rajpurohit of Socorro had filed a complaint at the Porvorim Police station stating that Abhishek Vinod Giri (32), a native of Lucknow-UP but residing at Socorro had come to stay in his building on rent in January 2021.

Giri befriended the complainant, allegedly impersonated himself as an Intelligence Bureau officer and is reported to have induced the complainant to pay Rs 7 lakh on the pretext of providing a job to his son in the Intelligence Bureau.

The accused absconded in November 2021 and since then, he had been on the run.

On registering an FIR, Porvorim Police Inspector Anant Gaonkar and Investigating Officer Lady Police Sub Inspector Pranita Mandrekar collected information of the accused and maintained technical surveillance. They found the accused to be changing phone numbers frequently and his place of stay was traced in Uttar Pradesh.

A police team comprising PSI Sitaram Malik, constables Mahadev Naik and Yogesh Shinde proceeded to Lucknow and after seven days of investigations, nabbed the accused at Sarojini Nagar, Lucknow on April 27 with the assistance of local police in Lucknow.

The accused was brought to Porvorim police station by transit remand and a local court remanded him to four days in police custody. Further investigation is in progress.
