Road accidents claimed 166 lives in 10 months

In the ten months this year between January-October, Goa's roads have been a killing field with 166 people dead in over 2,100 mishaps.
As many as 2,110 road accidents have been recorded in the books of police stations across Goa. And, Ponda happens to be the area where most -- 234 accidents were reported in the police station's jurisdiction. Also, Ponda accounts for most deaths on the roads -- 18 deaths.
Other police station areas where significantly high number of road accidents are reported include Verna (181), Panaji (163), Mapusa (149) and Porvorim (121).
After Ponda, Verna and Bicholim police stations have reported an identical 13 road accident deaths. Pernem had 10, Margao nine and Agacaim eight road accident deaths in these 10 months.
In over 40 per cent of the 2,110 road accidents, the people involved suffered injuries.
The rate of road accidents this year is marginally higher than in 2020, most part of which was lost to lockdowns and to battling the pandemic. Last year, Goa had 1,863 road accidents in which 178 people had lost their lives.
