As the cracks within the opposition widen just ahead of the monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Saturday said that the opposition MLAs, working in the interest of the State, are united and will put up a strong fight.
In a press statement issued, Alemao said that he, along with other opposition MLAs, will hold the government accountable for its failures in administration and addressing public issues on the Floor of the House.
The 15-day-long monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly is set to commence on July 21. The session, which will witness the passing of the State Budget 2025-26, will conclude on August 8.
Alemao said that despite the curtailed assembly session schedule, he and those opposition MLAs who are working in the interest of the state have planned to scrutinise the government's performance and raise critical questions.
“Law and order has collapsed in the State, but the government is busy hosting events and collecting commissions. There is a need to study the carrying capacity of the State as the Government is promoting mega housing projects by converting land. We will raise these issues in the assembly session,” Alemao said.
Alemao, Congress MLAs Carlos Ferreira and Altone D'Costa, and Aam Aadmi Party MLAs Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva recently met and worked out a strategy to corner the government in the Assembly. Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai and RGP MLA Viresh Borkar did not attend the meeting, claiming it was a mere formality.
Alemao said that the opposition will also bring plaguing issues to the notice of the government during zero hour and also by appropriately calling attentions. “The incapacitated BJP government is so afraid that it has played tactics to transfer starred LAQs to unstarred, so discussion doesn’t take place during the session,” he charged.
The opposition is set to raise its voice against the proposed power tariff hike on the first day of the Assembly session.
