Gloom descended in neighbourhoods of Taleigao and Arambol on Saturday after news trickled in of the death by drowning in Dodamarg of uncle-niece duo from these two villages.

Taleigao-based lawyer Vijay Palekar (55) and his niece Tanisha Thakur just 13 years of age and residing in Arambol were declared ‘brought dead’ at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Casarvanem-Pernem after they drowned while on a family picnic in the Kudashem locality of Dodamarg.

The news of the tragedy spread quickly and a deep sense of gloom descended on the Durgawadi neighbourhood of Taleigao where the Palekar family resides.

According to sources close to the family, which is in a complete state of shock, they had gone on a picnic to Kudashem in Dodamarg when the tragedy struck. Tanisha got pulled by a current and her uncle Vijay rushed to save her but tragically both of them drowned.

Both of them were retrieved and rushed to the PHC at Casarvarnem but unfortunately could not be revived and were declared brought dead by the doctor on duty.

The police authorities in Dodamarg are carrying out the investigation and will hand over the bodies to the family after all formalities are completed, the family sources said.

Meanwhile, several lawyers took to social media to express shock over the tragic demise of Adv Palekar.

“An atmosphere of gloom in the legal community. Vijay Palekar meets watery grave too early in life. My homage,” read a post by noted lawyer Cleofato Coutinho on Facebook.

Commenting on Coutinho’s FB wall, several other legal practitioners also expressed their shock and dismay and condoled the passing away of Adv Palekar.
