A 50-year-old woman rider from Chicalim was killed, while the pillion rider was seriously injured in a collision between a car and bike near St Jacinto Island on Friday afternoon.

Sources said the deceased, Reena Gonsalves, had picked a relative’s 17-year-old son from college and was moving towards her house in Chicalim on a scooter when she was hit by a speeding car from the wrong side.

The speed of the car was such that the deceased and the pillion rider were dragged to some distance and the car even damaged a roadside religious structure before coming to a halt.

While the woman succumbed to injuries at the Sub District Hospital, the pillion rider sustained grievous injuries and was initially moved to the Sub District Hospital, before being referred to the GMC hospital.

Sources and eyewitnesses claimed the car driver was under influence of alcohol and beer bottles were present in the car.

Vasco police rushed to the site and took the driver and the other occupants of the car under custody.

When contacted, Vasco police sources said the car was being driven by a minor boy from Mapusa and he did not have a driving licence.

"The driver is a 17-year-old boy and without a driving licence. He drove the car with four occupants in a rash and negligent manner while proceeding from Vasco to Panaji and when he reached near the roadside religious structure, he moved towards the wrong side and the car struck the scooter driven by the deceased along with a pillion rider.”

“Vasco police have registered an offence under Sections 279, 337, 304 A of IPC and Section 3, 4, 5 of MV Act. The accused minor boy has been sent to the JJB Merces," said the source.

Vasco PSI Swapnil Naik is investigating the case under the supervision of PI Kapil Nayak and guidance of Mormugao DySP Salim Shaikh.
