Goa needs stronger action against rising cybercrime

Cybercrime refers to any criminal activity involving a computer, mobile phone, or network. It includes crimes directly targeting computer systems and those using computers to commit offences such as fraud or data theft.

Common types of cybercrime include phishing, which tricks people into sharing sensitive information; malware and ransomware, which use harmful software to damage systems or demand payment; DDoS (Distributed Denial-of-Service) attacks, which overload servers to make them crash; identity theft, which involves stealing personal data for fraudulent use; and cyberstalking, which uses electronic communication to harass or threaten someone.

Many cybercrime cases have been reported across Goa, where hackers have gained access to social media accounts and stolen personal information. These hackers can control devices and monitor messages, calls, and social media activities.

Recently, hackers defaced public display boards in North Goa with the message “Pakistan Zindabad,” aiming to create communal tension.

People are urged to assist the Goa Police by reporting any cybercrime cases to the Ribandar Police Station. The government and police are also requested to set up a cybercrime police station in Margao, South Goa, so that people from the South do not have to travel long distances.

It is also important for the authorities to keep a close watch on outsiders creating trouble and targeting Goans.
