It is really shocking to read that drugs have reached schools on the north Goa coastal belt. This appears to be a deeper malaise in society, as both parents are working in a nuclear family system in the 21st century. Parents spend very little time with their children, which has also deprived the younger generation of the care that the older generation used to receive from their grandparents, who tend to be more mature and develop a sense of belonging. Parents are under the false impression that the teacher will develop the child in school for five hours, which is false, and they also believe that parenting ends with providing new electronic gadgets like mobiles, laptops, etc., for their children, which is also a wrong belief.
The main blame for such drug addiction should go to the parents and the media (advertisements and movies). So much is being said about sex education, but why aren’t we talking about psychological grooming so that children become responsible citizens? It is sad to say that we have placed more stress on the examination system.
It is better late than never. Educationists should employ a social worker to help children tide over behavioural problems, even though counsellors are appointed in schools to address stress factors.
