Covid has exposed state of hospitals

MICHAEL NUNES, Panjim | SEPTEMBER 21, 2020, 11:28 PM IST

Unhygienic wards and filthy toilets greet the patients who enter Covid hospitals or care centres. Inspite of having had two months to prepare for the pandemic, the Goa government initially arranged for only 100 beds confident that these were enough for Covid cases. It seems like they had their heads buried in the sand, and were ignorant of the terrible situation around the world.

CM Pramod Sawant has blamed citizens for increase in cases due to Ganesh Chaturthi. He even blamed citizens earlier for not maintaining social distancing during the pandemic when lockdown was imposed without any planning for essential supplies. Blaming citizens only shows the incompetency of the government.

While bureaucrats, MLAs and MPs get the best treatment on taxpayers money for coronavirus, the citizens are left to fend for themselves. Co-morbidities of MLAs, MPs and bureaucrats are treated, while co-morbidities are given as an excuse for the deaths of citizens infected with Covid.

The government has capped fees in private hospitals for Covid treatment at shocking rates. It seems like the residents of Goa are the government's milking cows.

If the Government of Goa was a company, and the Chief Minister and the Health Minister were its employees, would the management have kept them around with this kind of mismanagement?

It is time things are rectified so that the common man does not have to suffer.
