Govt must reduce travel allowance

The governments (State and Central) and perhaps several private companies have given their employees an option to work from home (WFH) because of the prevailing pandemic.

This is a good step so that there would be less commuting by employees and it also helps to control the number of Covid-19 cases.

The employees also ‘enjoy’ the best of the worlds: work and home. Of course, WFH has its own pros and cons but that is inevitable. The employees are generally paid travel allowances but now that WFH has been implemented the employers could be paid this allowance on a pro-rata basis.

The employees should be compensated only for those days they attend office and their attendance is recorded. It is left to the private companies whether to execute this cost cutting measure but the governments could definitely do so.

In this manner the exchequer could stand to gain a substantial amount of its revenue and this could be put to good use elsewhere.
