Vijai’s move to speak at Sanquelim meeting raises eyebrows

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | JANUARY 21, 2023, 12:34 AM IST

Many an eyebrow was raised when Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai took the Save Mhadei, Save Goa platform to address January 16 rally at Sanquelim. For, the Congress and AAP MLAs had already decided not to address the rally, leaving political observers to wonder whether the Goa Forward party will follow suit. Questions were also raised whether Vijaibab was not kept in the loop when the Congress and AAP decided not to address the rally, or, whether Vijaibab insisted on addressing the rally since it offered him the platform to fire potshots at Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant in his fiefdom. Many a question indeed remains unanswered.

Cong manages united Oppn so far, but leaders sound caution

So far, the Congress leadership is believed to have managed to take the Opposition along to put up a united front on many a public issue, including Mhadei. Party leaders, however, have sounded caution. For, some of the party leaders are believed to have taken exception to attempts by an opposition party to score brownie points by painting the main Opposition party in bad light. While party leaders say there’s no harm in forging opposition unity, they have sounded caution -- the party should take care to ensure the rival players do not encroach on its traditional space. Any takers?

Girish mum on Sankalp embracing RSS ideology

Ex-GPCC chief Girishbab Chodankar seemed to have maintained silence on the question of Congress-turned-BJP Mormugao MLA Sankalpbab Amonkar in RSS attire. That, however, has not stopped a section of the partymen to send reports to Delhi, highlighting how Girishbab’s close friend over the years has embraced the RSS ideology, just months after quitting the Congress to join the BJP. In fact, Sankalpbab’s decision to wear the RSS uniform has given a platform for Girishbab baiters to fire fresh salvo at the ex-Congress president. Any questions?

Kamat has his way as govt passes amendment to civic chief polls

He may be still awaiting the promised reward for his defection. Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Diggu, however, has his way when he got the government pass the Amendment mandating election of Municipal Chairperson by show of hands. The Amendment ensures that Diggu will continue to rule the Margao Municipal Council via his Man Friday and Municipal Chairperson, Damubab Shirodkar at least for the moment. Wait and watch whether Vijaibab has any plan up his sleeves in the Margao Municipal Council post-amendment, more so after his offer that he would not disturb the BJP-led Margao Municipal Council if the amendment is withdrawn, had no takers from the government.

Reginaldo in a tight spot over mobile tower issue

Curtorim Independent MLA Reginaldbab Lourenco may suddenly realise that the controversial mobile tower has emerged as a thorn in his flesh in his fiefdom. Neither the telecom company nor the authorities have shown signs of retreating. And, neither are the agitating residents of Virabhat willing to give up the battle, leaving the MLA in a tight spot. The residents seemed not convinced when Reginaldbab sought to wriggle out of the row by saying the MLA has no power to stop the mobile towers. Wait and watch how the MLA goes about the matter when he has planned a meeting with the authorities early next week.
