Goa's Ethan Vaz won the team gold medal for India in the Under-11 open category at the Asian Schools Chess Championships 2021, held online by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), from July 29 to 31.

The India A team of Aakash G (Tamil Nadu), Krishna Goutham (Kerala), Mrinmoy Rajkhowa (Assam) and Ethan got the better of teams India B and Iran A in a close contest. Ethan, an AIM, was selected to represent India at the tournament after having secured a 3rd runner-up position at the National Schools Chess Championship earlier in July.

Goa Chess Association (GCA) president Nilesh Cabral, the State Power Minister, congratulated Ethan, who is a Class 5 student at The King's School, Sao Jose de Areal, and is coached by Prakash Vikram Singh of Chess Guru Goa Academy, Margao.

"We congratulate Ethan on his consistent performance, winning this team gold medal for India and making Goa proud once again. It's a great moment for Goan chess, and we are proud of his streak of accomplishments at national and international level,” Cabral said.

GCA secretary Kishor Bandekar informed that this is Ethan's third international medal for India. “Earlier he had won the individual gold medal in rapid chess and individual silver medal in blitz chess at the Western Asia Chess Championships, 2019," Bandekar said.
