Goan boxing celebrates Shrisha's rare feat

Goan boxer Shrisha Jampula, who achieved the rare feat of winning a medal at the senior national boxing championship earlier in the year, was felicitated by Goa Amateur Boxing Association (GABA).

Shrisha won a bronze medal at the 5th Elite Women National Boxing Championship in Hisar, Haryana on October 27 to end Goa's 18-year wait for a podium finish in the event. The Goan reached the semifinals to secure the medal - a first since Vidya Bandekar won a medal of the same hue while representing Goa Police in 2003.

Shrisha was felicitated by GABA president, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, in the presence of the association vice-president Lenny D'Gama, secretary Danuska Da Gama, executive member Ninil Dsouza and treasurer Hemant Nagvenkar.

“Boxing is a sport that not only needs physical strength but also intelligence. GABA in the last few years has been doing its part to ensure boxing gets the right place. The last two years have been very stressful for the boxers in terms of putting their talents right as the pandemic cut their whole cycle,” Khaunte said during the function.

“It’s a moment of pride for all of us. Shrisha is an example to all the other boxers... where there’s a will, there’s a way," the GABA president said.

"GABA, as promised, disbursed Rs 20,000 for the bronze medalist at the nationals of which 30 per cent will be divided between the basic coach and the coaches that took the team to the nationals," the association said in a press statement.
