Sanquelim B'ton League begins on Oct 30, top shuttlers to be in action

Some of the top shuttlers from the Bicholim and Sattari talukas will be in action when the first edition of the Sanquelim Badminton League (SBL) gets underway on Friday, October 30. 

The league organised by Sanquelim Shuttlers will feature nine teams with more than 80 players competing for the championship trophies, other prizes and honours.

The official badminton tournament season for 2020 will kick-start with the novel event. The league team event, which concludes on Sunday, November 1, will be staged at the badminton courts of Multipurpose stadium, Sanquelim. The first of this kind league team championship for these two talukas will be organised by Sanquelim Shuttlers, an affiliated unit of Goa Badminton Association.  

"It's an excellent opportunity for badminton players from the talukas of Sattari and Bicholim to compete in a very exciting format. Many players from these talukas have been performing well in recent years and this championship gives them a platform to explore their skills in a very professional set-up and environment,” said Narahar Thakur, president of Goa Badminton Association.

“The Sanquelim Badminton League is a great platform to start the season. The organising club, Sanquelim Shuttlers, are one of our youngest members, but amongst the most active. The badminton league is great news for the competing players who will get an opportunity to play against their best counterparts. In these difficult pandemic times, Sanquelim Shuttlers are paving the way  which is a big boost to the association as well as other clubs who can take similar initiatives in other areas by adhering to SOPs and safety norms,” stated Sandeep Heble, the Goa Badminton Association secretary.  

Prominent players who will participate in the championship are Karan Dhavaskar, Nilesh Parab, Sohan Naik, Rudra Phadte, Aryan Phatarpekar, Prasad Ajgaonkar, Siraj Wadkar, Abhishek Swamy, Omkar Fulari, Nomaa Sancoalcar, Mayushri Ajgaonkar and Roopam Sancoalcar. Earlier, a player auction on the lines of India’s Premier Badminton League was held, where the nine teams bid for the 80+ players. The nine teams competing for the top honours are: Genius Fighters, La Tara Smashers, Parthivi’s Supersmasher, Ninja Strikers, Overlockedd Droppers, ag THRASHERS, MLT Shuttlers, Chaitanya Smashers and Crystal Badminators.

The three-day league will have its semi-finals and finals on November 1.
