While the port town is all set to celebrate the centenary celebrations of Camara De Mormugao, former minster Rajendra Arlekar on Saturday said the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) could be upgraded to a corporation considering the rise in population in the municipality.
Speaking to reporters, Arlekar also extended support to the event to be hosted by the MMC as long as the programme is not to mark the celebrations of 100 years of naming the city as Vasco da Gama.
“I feel that celebrations for the 100 years of Vasco City is wrong as the name Vasco da Gama itself depicts the rule of foreign countries over us making us their slaves. We must also have a relook and rethink over the name of the Vasco de Gama as the name of the city. Celebrating to mark 100 years of the city’ name Vasco da Gama would be an insult to our freedom fighters as well,” said Arlekar.
Arlekar, however, said the centenary celebrations for the Camara de Mormugao is necessary and MMC must bring forth all the development the council took up over the last 100 years.
“The MMC must also bring forth to the residents what they plan to do for the future and the council should make a masterplan for Vasco City.”
He said the Camara de Mormugao had earlier catered to the entire taluka, but was now restricted to a smaller Jurisdiction because of a rise in population. “The government must now rethink and increase the scope of work of this council and upgrade the MMC to that of a corporation on the occasion of the centenary year. The MMC chairperson, chief officer, councillors and prominent citizens must discuss the possibility of upgrading the MMC to a corporation.”
