Honest Film review: AVOI

Story

This is a short film by Eddy de Quepem. The film is about a mother's love. A son is returning home after two years and the mother awaits his return. The son is on his way beaten up by a goon, who later takes shelter in the house of the mother's son when the police is in pursuit of the goon. The son dies in the arms of the mother and the mother accepts her sons killer as her son.

Screenplay

The screenplay has nothing filmy in it and is a presentation of a stage play with a few additions here and there. The proceedings defy simple thinking leaving aside logic. Neither the story nor the screenplay has any depth in it.

Music

The film has no title song or any other song in it. There is ample scope for songs, but the director didn’t feel it right to look into this aspect. The background score and effect is scarce, and good attention is not paid, as a result, the film witnesses drabness.

Acting

The mother appears too young for the role but is natural in her dialogue delivery. The son too gives a good display of his character but since the script is weak there isn’t any scope. The goon has a good personality suited for the character but then is exaggerating in his portrayal and appears too unnatural and more as if acting in a carnival khell. The policeman has no personality of a police and appears more of a comedian.

Cinematography

The Cinematography and editing is average. No valuable use of camera lens is made. The film appears to be shot as enacted more like a stage play. The cinematographer appears short of ideas with the different use of shots.

Direction

Direction is the drawback of the film. The casting is a big issue. No film craft is visible in the entire film.
