Bicholim is a rare town that has managed to put together a garbage disposal plan

The Bicholim Municipal Council has smelt a way out of thegarbage problem. Or has at least begun.

BMC has managed to put a proper system in place to segregateand dispose off waste generated in the municipal area.

BMC has a garbage treatment plant where on an average 4 to 5tons of waste is treated.

The municipality has given two buckets to every household inBicholim where the initial segregation of the garbage takes place.

BMC employees then collect door to door waste every day anddump it at the garbage treatment plant.

The segregated garbage is then treated and later convertedinto manure. The decomposed manure is later sold at Rs 4 per kg. The plasticwaste is collected and sold to scrap owners who further recycle it.

But apart from that, BMC has failed to get any majordevelopmental projects in the town. Part of the reason for lack of progress wasbecause the council was backed by BJP, which was in the opposition then.

Despite having completed two years, the council continues towork on various projects, which were proposed by the earlier council.

“Currently various projects are in pipeline, which willprovide a better infrastructure for people. The ongoing works like constructionof market building and banning of plastic in the city were proposed by theearlier council,” said Ajit Birje, a councillor in BMC.

BMC has received Rs 9 crore for the development of the city, which is being used by the council, Birje added.

After the assembly election the Council witnessed just oneno confidence motion being brought against Vice-Chairperson Shashikant NaikHalarnakar.

“The current MLA, Naresh Sawal tried to take control overthe council but failed,” said that Riaz Baig, deputy chairperson of BMC.

He further disclosed that the council has currentlyinitiated development projects, which includes road widening works across thecity and construction of drains which will be undertaken through funds providedby the government.

“BMChas decided to take up three major projects, whichincludes second phase of market where in all gada’s across the city will berehabilitated, work on Shivaji football ground and sewerage treatment plantunder the JNNURM programme,” Baig said.
