Bracing up for rush and tourist influx during the upcoming festive Christmas-New Year celebration season, the State's traffic control authorities are bracing up to tackle the load with a tailor-made traffic plan.

“The traffic plan for Christmas is ready for Christmas,” Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Thursday, adding that the Public Works Department (PWD) is working out the logistics to implement the suggestions made by the transport authorities -- Goa Police's traffic cell and the RTO -- to minimize mishaps.

Measures like erecting barricades, speed breakers among others will be executed within the next two months, Sawant who has retained the PWD portfolio with himself after the recent cabinet reshuffle, has said.

Meanwhile, the task force set up by the State government to come up with solutions to Goa's high rate of road accidents, has become fully operational, he said, adding that this task force met earlier this week to review these recommendations.

Goa experiences a heavy influx of tourists every year, with one estimate suggesting that footfalls tip Goa's population in the fortnight around Christmas and New Year. Correspondingly the number of road accidents and fatalities also shoot up in the same period.

According to Sawant, the Superintendent of Police (Traffic) is working the plan to bring down the accident rates during this peak Christmas and New Year season.
